Basil L. Walters

        Born Frankfort, Indiana May 3,1896,   Received nickname "Stuffy" during a baseball game as a boy.  Grandson of Civil War Veteran Frederick Walters. Son of Frederick Walters and his wife, Nancy C. Fisher granddaughter of David Fisher, Clinton County Pioneer.

        Graduated from Old Stoney High School in Frankfort.  Attended Indiana University for one year prior to enlisting in the Ambulance Corps where he faithfully served his county in Italy during W.W. I

        Mr. Walters married  Reah E. Handy in 1923.  Illustrious Newspaper Career beginning with the Milwaukee Journal as a correspondent stationed in New York, followed by an offer and acceptance of the position of news editor followed by promotion to Managing editor for the Des Moines Register owned by the Cowles family and where deceased President Ronald Regan worked for him as a cub reporter.

        The Minneapolis Star became his next project as managing editor.  Later accepting a position with the Detroit Free Press.  Ending a renowned career as the Executive Editor for Knight Newspapers headquartered at The Chicago Daily News in Chicago, Illinois.

        Mr. Walters served as Director of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.  During his career, Mr. Walters was presented with the John Peter Zenger Freedom of the Press Award in 1955.

        Mr. and Mrs. Walters traveled the world many times over during their lifetimes.  They raised a family of three children and grandchildren.

        They retired to Tonaja Farm (the old Walters Farm) where a modern home was built around the original  kitchen hearth on 240 acres of land located on Kelley Road in Frankfort, Indiana.
