Pop Stair, 1944

Russell Stairs was an airplane pilot who received one of the first licenses issued.  He lived in Portland, Oregon for many before returning to Mulberry.  Pop converted 14 acres on the north edge of Mulberry , Indiana into a flying field.  He taught flying to Purdue students and other interested young men.  The airport was in operation from 1928 - 1960.  Pop was an instructor to (among others ) Roger Chaffee and John Glenn , both became astronauts on moon flights.
