Pop Stair, 1944
- Russell Stairs was an airplane pilot who received one of the first
licenses issued. He lived in Portland, Oregon for many before
returning to Mulberry. Pop converted 14 acres on the north edge of
Mulberry , Indiana into a flying field. He taught flying to Purdue
students and other interested young men. The airport was in operation
from 1928 - 1960. Pop was an instructor to (among others ) Roger
Chaffee and John Glenn , both became astronauts on moon flights.
